  Bad Moon

review by Bobby Blakey

Shout Factory continues to bring the horror classics to the fans through their Scream Factory brand. The latest getting released on Blu-ray for the first time is the 1996 werewolf flick Bad Moon starring Marel Hemmingway, Michael Pare, and Mason Gamble.

Bad Moon follows one man's struggle to contain the curse he hides within and his last-ditch attempt to free himself with the love of family. But when it looks as if he is losing his battle, and endangering all he holds most dear, the family dog, Thor, is the last hope for his family's survival and the end to his Werewolf curse. Werewolf films seem to be the one monster genre that they never seem to get right. Every so often one comes along that manages to capture a bit of that werewolf and this film is one of them. Sure it is a bit cheesy on the story side, but as a whole it works. They clearly were looking to change the mythology of the werewolf in the best way possible and it works to create a simple but great addition to the genre. The best part of the film comes in the werewolf itself being practical effects and man in suit. There are some shots where the face of the creatures is a bit silly, but overall it is great fun to watch in action and offers up some fun gory moments. The cast all do a great job and mesh that with the great practical effects and overall classic nature with a new twist you have a great werewolf film that fans will be sure to enjoy.

This is one of those films that hardcore werewolf fans probably already know about, but it still comes off as one of those great hidden gems that horror fans will no doubt want in their collection. In addition to the fil this new release offers up plenty of special features including interviews, storyboards, trailer, commentary and both the theatrical and director’s cut of the film. Step out of the woods and into the terror when Bad Moon comes to Blu-ray on July 19th from Shout Factory.
