It is amazing that in his long career that Nicolas Cage has never done a western. That is all changed now with his latest film The Old Way co-starring Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Noah Le Gros, Clint Howard, Kerry Knuppe, Nick Searcy, Shiloh Fernandez and Abraham Benrubi. Could Cage actually bring something new to the western genre or will it be a tale of vengeance not worth putting on your boots for?

    

The Old Way follows Colton Briggs, a cold-blooded gunslinger turned respectable family man. When an outlaw and his gang put Colton and his family in peril, Colton is forced to take up arms with an unlikely partner, his 12-year-old daughter.

 

I love Nicolas Cage and have loved his choices as of late. I was excited to see him take on something different for him like the western genre and think he looks good for era. That being said I was also hesitant as a lot of the westerns coming out these days are just not all that great. I am happy to say that while the film is pretty generic and by the numbers it is still enjoyable.

 

I think had it not been Cage carrying it the film might have fallen into the cracks with little care, but he is the best thing about the film. He brings the stoic gunslinger to life only speaking dialogue to move the film along and no filler. His character expresses very little emotion by design and explains why as they are on their road to vengeance.

 

It brings just enough story to set it all up and then dives right into the road to revenger complete with a variety of gunfights that are well done. This film isn’t breaking any new ground to the genre, but does deliver exactly what it promises. Sure it is pretty generic and nothing really stands out
