While most noted for their live action series Netflix has been offering up some great animation series as well including Big Mouth, Paradise PD and more. Not one of their most popular BoJack Horseman is getting the home release thanks to Shout Factory with BoJack Horseman: Seasons One & Two on Blu-ray.

 

Bojack Horseman follows a Los Angeles in which humans and anthropomorphic animal-people coexist, BoJack Horseman is an animated show about one man (who is also a horse) who peaked early and is trying to figure out what to do with his life now. An outrageous and dark comedy with a melancholy center, the show asks the question, “what happens when you have the world at your fingertips and you still can’t figure out how to be happy?” This series features a great voice cast including Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, Aaron Paul and Will Arnett as Bojack.

 

When I first heard of this show I had no interest as it just didn’t look like it would work, but I was way off. This series is hilarious in all sorts of ways including just the idea itself and for some reason just works. I love the character designs throughout with the meshing of both animal and humans in a world that they just accept to be as it is. The simplistic nature of the artwork and focus on making BoJack’s skin look layered makes it excellent all around. Each episode is absurd and perfect all at once. There are numerous times throughout that I laughed out loud while it still offering up some heartfelt moments in his journey to rediscover himself and his stardom.

 

This is a story we have seen numerous times, but the addition of the anthromorphic animals makes it feel fresh and new. With each season it just keeps getting better and better in every way. BoJack might be the focus, but there are plenty of stories of the other characters that are front and center making it feel all the bigger. This release not only includes all 25 episodes from the first two seasons but also bonus content including commentary, galleries, animatics, and more. I can only hope that this is only the first release and we get more seasons of this great series to bring home.
