25th Anniversary Edition Steelbook
review by Drusilla Blakey
It's hard to believe that this film is celebrating its 25th anniversary! As I sat down to watch this newly released steelbook edition of the film, I started wondering if it would still be as fun as I remembered. Guess what, it totally is.
Clueless is the story of 15 year old high school students Cher (portrayed by Alicia Silverstone) and Dion (portrayed by Stacy Dash) who are best friends that spend most of their time shopping, hanging out, going to parties, etc. Cher also likes to play matchmaker with everyone around her. However, one day she realizes that she's been completely Clueless about what really matters in life, and mostly about love. Now, for those of you who enjoy Jane Austen, the film is loosely based on Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma, but with a very modern setting of Beverly Hills. So it's fun, but with depth.
I feel this film is still funny and relevant to today's high school experience. You have the rich kids, the loner kids, the nerdy group, etc. They are all shown here and even described in a hilarious way. Alicia Silverstone does a great job in this film and is surrounded by an amazing cast who many of you will know from some of their more recent work: Paul Rudd, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer...and of course sweet Brittany Murphy who we lost too soon.
The film is an important coming of age story, a love story, and a friendship
story. It may be 25 years old, but in some ways, it's truly timeless. It also introduced us to a lot of the slang and social references that we still use today and in watching the bonus features included in this special edition, you can see how hard the cast had to work to 'learn a new language' and make it feel natural and seamless.
If you've never seen this film, then it's time you did. And if you haven't seen it lately, then it's time to gather up your homies and roll on down to grab a copy and watch it again. You will definitely fall in love again.
In addition to the film this anniversary release also includes over an hour of previously released special features including a “Clue or False” trivia game, a fashion featurette, a look at the class of ’95, a “Suck ‘n Blow” tutorial, original theatrical trailers and more.
