Deliver Us From Evil
review by Bobby Blakey
Well Go USA not only continues to bring the great martial arts films to the US, but some great crime flicks as well. The latest is the Korean film Deliver Us From Evil starring Hwang Jung-min, Lee Jung-jae, Park Jeong-min, Park Soi, and Choi Moon with Hong Won Chan in the director’s chair. Could this action thriller bring the pain or will it fail to find redemption?
Deliver Us From Evil follows a mercenary with a murky past as a government black ops agent is forced to re-emerge from the shadows when he learns the incident is closely connected to him after the shocking kidnapping of a little girl in Thailand. With the help of expat Yui, he flies to Thailand and begins tracking the girl’s whereabouts, moving ever closer to the notorious child trafficking ring responsible for her abduction. However, when an infamous gangster nicknamed The Butcher learns just who has entered the country and is finally within his grasp, he goes on a bloody rampage to thwart the ex-agent’s rescue mission as retaliation for a killing that even he will never be able to forget or forgive.
You never know what you are going to get in this Asian cop flicks, but more often than not they end up being more than you expected. This film is no different as it plays up as not just another crime thriller, but a full on action flick as well. The story is intense and heartbreaking as you follow these two characters on a parallel journey that crosses them into a violent game of cat and mouse.
During the meat of the film it is a bit more methodical as one continues to solve the mystery of the kidnapping and those behind it while the other is hunting him. This offers up some great and intense moments to build the characters as well as some great action. There is some random action here and there initially with some knife fights, shoot outs and car chases that are good, but nothing compared to when it unleashes the full on chaos in the last half.
During the final act it kicks all kinds of ass bringing just about every aspect of an action flick you could thing of in all its awesome glory. The action itself is well done and a blast to watch, but it is even further enhanced by some amazing visuals. There are some just downright badass shots including a slow motion gun blast into a windshield and slow motion dive through a moving car windshield that puts Chuck Norris’ in Good Guys Wear Black to shame.
