Keanu

review by Bobby Blakey

The funny duo of Key and Peele have already blasted their way into homes with their hit series Key and Peele. While they have both appeared in various film and TV projects separately fans have been eager to see them team up for a big screen outing and now they are getting their wish with their film Keanu. The film not only stars the dynamic duo of comedy, but also Method Man, Jason Mitchell, Tiffany Haddish, Nia Long, and Will Forte, but does it hit the mark fans are hoping for or will their first outing be their last?

Keanu follows two friends who hatch a plot to retrieve a stolen kitten by posing as drug dealers for a street gang. The trailers for this film were funny, but there was a fear that this film would end up just being a spoof of Joh Wick. Thankfully they made sure to deliver something so much better while still keeping some of that aspect as the undertone. The story is nothing overly original, but the insane chemistry between the two takes the film to the next level. They are so likeable on every level and not afraid to poke fun at themselves you cannot help but love everything about them. Their banter about nonsense is some of the best moments of the film and never gets old. The story it obviously silly, but they bring some heart to it to keep it from coming off as dumb as it actually is and instead you buy into it all. The supporting cast all do a great job with Method Man keeping to his usual tough guy status and the rest of them a bit all over the place. There is a running theme of George Michael that will have you laughing out loud at every turn.

The real star here is the cat itself that is just adorable in every scene. They have smartly kept it front and center for a lot of the film without it becoming a weird animal movie. Every shot with that cat is cuter than the next even when it is running for its life in a hail of bullets. On the action side there is actually some really well handled action sequences that incorporate some classic visuals and plenty of blood spray to please any action fan. Coupled with the hilarious hijinx, some really fun cameos and the always brilliant Key and Peele you get a movie that manages to knock it out of the park.

Going into this know that it is silly, but just let it happen as that is part of the charm. There are some great moments here and they take full advantage of the R rating to make their feature team up a rousing success. Stay through the credits as there is an after credit scene that could lead into something else or just another fun addition to part of the already fun story. In addition to the film this release also includes deleted scenes, a gag reel and  a featurette that takes you behind the making of their first movie.

Join in on the action to bring their cat back home when Keanu hits Blu-ray and DVD on August 2nd and available now on Digital HD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
