Well Go USA continues to be the go to distributor for all things in the Asian film market most notably the martial arts world. Their latest film Kung Fu League stars Yu-Hang To, Wenzhuo Zhao, Jay Chou, and in his cinematic debut, Ashin and looks to bring comedy and martial arts action together. Could this be as fun as the idea or will it fail to make the leap off the page?

Kung Fu League follows Fei Ying Xiong whose manager prevents from getting the girl he loves, so he summons the help from four legendary Kung Fu masters to learn the highest level of martial arts from the best in history and to defeat his enemies who stand in the way of the things he wants most. This is one of the few martial arts films that I did not watch the trailer for before checking it out. There was no doubt from the box cover of what they were going to for. This is a silly story no doubt, but is crafted in a way that works more than it has any right to, mostly due to the fun they have with the four masters.

These four characters are varying real life masters that have been portrayed on the big screen in various films by some of the biggest names in martial arts including Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Bruce Lee. The looks and characteristics fully embody the versions we have seen in these guys performances making you feel like they have jumped right into this movie. Sure it is cheesy at times and offers up a lot of laughable moments in the action, but that is kind the idea.

There is a sweet love story underneath the over the top action and characters that isn’t anything we haven’t seen before, but with the martial arts twist makes it feel fresh. Every time it starts to find a more serious tone one of the fights kick off and you are reminded of the ridiculousness of it all. I loved that they not only kept the varying fighting styles, but also poked jabs at each other for some things like one guy always taking his shirt off.

In the end this is a fun little martial arts flick, but might not work for everyone. Just go in and have some fun with it and I think you will have a great time. Grab your copy of Kung Fu League available now on Blu-ray and DVD from Well Go USA.
