Nobody’s Fool
review by Bobby Blakey
For years Tyler Perry has been a heavy hitter in both Hollywood and the theater, most notably with his productions focusing on the Madea character. He has not only focused on that character and offered up some really great movies. His latest Nobody’s Fool stars Tiffany Haddish, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwick, Mehcad Brooks, Amber Riley and Whoopi Goldberg, but does it bring the laughs and drama or will it not be what it seems?
Nobody’s Fool follows wild child Tanya trying to get back on her feet who looks to her buttoned-up, by the book sister Danica to help her get back on track. As these polar opposites collide, Tanya discovers that Danica’s picture-perfect life including her mysterious boyfriend who may not be what it seems. I am a fan of most of Perry’s films and while I love the Madea character I have to say I have not a big fan of the straight comedy films later in her series. This latest film is leaving that behind for the moment and taking on a romantic dramedy but to my surprise this film is way more layered than I thought it would be.
The story is pretty predictable, but works thanks to bringing in the world of Catfishing into the mix. Being a fan of that show helped bet me more invested here for the entertainment aspect. The cast are all great with everyone playing the more straight role allowing Tiffany Haddish to do her thing. I know some aren’t big fans of the over the top performances, but I love seeing her just go off in a role. Here they make reference to her persona that makes it work even better and she holds nothing back. Most of the best laughs are all hers with the always great Whoopi Goldberg bringing some to the mix as well. Big props to Supergirl star Mehcad Brooks who is all offering up some great moments in his small amount of time on screen.
In the end this is one of the better Perry films of late with some great real dialogue and reactions to the varying circumstances of the story. Sure it’s not offering up anything that hasn’t been seen in some format of the genre, but the cast and laughs really worked for me to make it something fresh. Even if you are not a fan of Tyker Perry this is one to give a shot as it is something different than his previous films.
In addition to the film this release includes bonus content including deleted, extended & alternate scenes, a gag reel, numerous featurettes and more. Grab your copy of Nobody’s Fool available now on digital, Blu-ray and DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment.
