Orange is the New Black:
The Complete Series Collection review by Bobby Blakey

I was a big fan of Kenji Kohan’s series Weeds during its run so when I realized he was doing the new show Orange Is The New Black I was instantly interested. The series features a great cast including Taylor Schilling, Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon, Kate Mulgrew, Uzo Aduba, Daniella Brooks, Dascha Polanco, Selenis Leyva, Taryn Manning, Natasha Lyonne, Samira Wiley, Adrienne C. Moore, Laverne Cox and Nick Sandow. Now Liosngate is bringing the entire series home in one collection for fans.
Orange is the New Black follows Piper Chapman, a public relations executive with a career, a fiancé – and a wild past involving a suitcase full of drug money. Sentenced to a federal women’s penitentiary, Piper slowly adjusts to her new reality of arbitrary rules and petty cruelties. On the inside are heartbroken, hilarious, eccentric characters – Pennsatucky, Red, Crazy Eyes, Taystee, and a host of others – who will challenge everything Piper believes in, especially herself.
When the series started it kept the primary focus on Piper and her struggles adapting to prison, but as the series went on it evolved in to so much more. There are so many interesting characters sprinkled throughout with their own journey’s that you can’t help but get invested in them all. Like with any show there are story arcs that are better than others, but I think everything
worked here and the few moments where it seemed like it might go off the rails managed to reign itself back in.

Every story arc was interesting and even got a bit deep at times as the characters developed. As the series went on it seemed like it veered away from some of the funnier elements and got a bit heavier complete with some deaths that were just heartbreaking. Even so it still maintained its overall tone to keep it fresh and entertaining throughout. Sure there are the usual silly elements thrown into prison stories, but as a whole it just all worked.

The entire cast of the series throughout its run are outstanding. Each of them bring their own energy and unique personas to the mix to give it a fresh and interesting group to follow. Some are true standouts of course, but the entirety of them nail it from beginning to end. You can’t help but care what happens to them even when they do something stupid.

As someone who is a big fan of shows like OZ and Prison Break I was a bit concerned to see how this would work and it stands out all its own. It is a great series that has a little something for everyone while bringing all the laughs, heart, depth and pain needed to keep the drama alive.

Whether you are already a fan or just discovering it for the first time this new set is a must have. In addition to all 91 episodes of the series as well as bonus content including commentaries, gag reels, featurettes and so much more.
