Spies in Disguise
review by Bobby Blakey
Animated films come along all the time, but its really more about how original they are that really captures the audience. The latest, Spies in Disguise starring Will Smith, Tom Holland, Ben Mendelsohn, Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, DJ Khaled, and Masi Oka brings what could be a fun new twist on the spy genre. Could this flick offer up the laughs and spy intrigue or will it be for the birds?

Spies in Disguise follows super spy Lance Sterling and scientist Walter Beckett are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is … not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo are forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise – transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic… pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to think about this one due to the concept alone, but have to say the trailers looked pretty slick in visuals alone. While the film isn’t offering up anything overly new I did fully enjoy the crazy ride. The twist of the body switch turning into a pigeon does offer a new take on it and surprising works better than I thought it would overall. The story is silly of course, but sticks to the spy genre despite the hardships of being a bird now. I think the real treat here is getting to hear Smith and Holland banter back and forth. They are perfect voice casting and make this film a ton of fun.
The animation and visuals are excellent offering up some vibrant looks that help to elevate this film to something bigger than average. There is plenty of silly action and fun that works for the whole family. The kids will no doubt love it, but adults looking for something bigger or new might find it a bit mundane. I had a blast with it, but felt the generic nature of it all in all its fun.
In addition to the film this release offers up bonus content including a gallery, music video, featurettes and more. Grab your copy of Spies in Disguise available now on digital, 4K Ultra, Blu-ray and DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
