Super Sons: Book 1

The Polarshield Project             review by Bobby Blakey

Over the last few years DC has done a lot to bring the next generation of young heroes to the forefront once again, but not just the Teen Titans. Two fo the biggest have been Jon Kent and Damian Wayne who have already had their own series together, but now are in an all-new series under the new DC Zoom imprint called Super Sons: Book 1 – The Polarshield Project from creators Ridley Pearson and Ile Gonzalez.

The first book follows Jon Kent and Damian Wayne who are opposite in every way except one—they are the sons of the World’s Greatest Heroes! To uncover a global conspiracy, this unlikely dynamic duo will need to learn to trust each other and work together to save the Earth. The polar ice caps have nearly melted away, causing devastation to coastal cities. Erratic, deadly weather forces everyone inland, tearing families apart. Earth is facing its greatest crisis—and Superman and Batman are nowhere to be found, but who is the mysterious Candace? And what secrets does she hold that could be the key to everything?

While not a huge fan of either Robin or Superboy, this latest iteration is a lot of fun and one of the first in a while done directly for the younger audience. The elseworlds feel of it adds to the story giving it time to let these guys meet and get to know each other while still giving that familiar element to them both. Not overly a fan of the costume looks this time around, but it serves the story they are telling well enough. On the flip side it allows growth for them both as the story moves forward. The artwork from Ile Gonzalez young vibrant feel to it that not only matches the story perfectly, but one that will be more relatable to the young reader. The story itself is good allowing their story to be told while thrusting them into an adventure.

While it is geared towards the younger audience I was impressed to how well it still worked for all ages. Being in graphic novel form but frame down to the size of a young adult novel makes it more appealing to the core audience and will no doubt find its audience who will look forward to seeing what’s next.
