                The Strain:

The Complete Third Season

                              review by Bobby Blakey

At this point there are a lot of TV series focusing on creatures of the night from all aspects. It has become more about the original direction than what they are focused on to make for a show that will stand out. In 2014 The Strain debuted based off the novel series of the same name from Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. Now fans can get caught up on the latest season with The Strain: The Complete Third Season on DVD.

This season the war between the bloodthirsty strigoi and the remaining human survivors of New York intensifies. Although Dr. Ephraim Goodweather’s bioweapon initially helped stave off the vampiric creatures, they have evolved into a bigger threat to humanity than ever. Now, distraught over his kidnapped son, Eph teams with Dutch to search for signs of weakness in the strigoi. Meanwhile, Abraham Setrakian’s discovery of a mysterious shipment from Egypt brings a shocking realization in this pulse-pounding show filled with intense sci-fi action and thrilling plot twists. The first two seasons of the show were great but did have some hit miss aspects to them. Thankfully this season seemed a lot more focused and offered up a lot more fun and gore.

I really enjoyed almost every aspect of the series this season. It felt more like they were actually building to something, when they were, as opposed to just the nonstop vampire creature attacks. The addition to some alliances offered up a more balance of power and in turn some great action moments. There are some great kills here that showcase some awesome effects and creativity that sets this show apart all its own. There are a few of the side stories that drag a bit, but not so much to hurt the overall season. Everything this season builds to the ultimate finale that works on every way. Of course the end is just the beginning for the fourth and final season that will no doubt be an all-out war for survival.

This collection features all 10 episodes of the season as well as bonus content including a gag reel, deleted scenes, a music video and companion series The Strain: Under Siege. Grab your copy of The Strain: The Complete Third Season available now on DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
