Trying to turn a game into a movie has always been a tricky thing, but when they announce Minecraft as a movie it just seemed like an instant failure. The addition to Napolean Dynamite and Nacho Libre director made its success all the better, but him reteaming with Jack Black for the flick A Minecraft Movie seemed like it could be something special if done right. Then came word of Jason Mamoa in the mix and I was officially interested not mention the rest of the supporting cast Emma Myers, Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.

A Minecraft Movie follows four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie and Dawn who find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Outside of the cast I had zero interest or hope that this film would work. I have never played the game and know nothing of it other than some of the visuals and square aspects. Finally, sitting down to watch it after its massive success I was a bit more optimistic and for good reason. This film is a hell of a lot of fun and one I was completely wrong about. Is it silly and ridiculous? Of course, that is kind of the point and part of its charm.

The story is silly, but the perfect set up with a montage and narration of Jack Black’s Steve before getting into the rest of the cast. I was confused by the vibe of Mamoa from the trailers, but it makes total sense once you see it in all its hilarious glory. The entire cast is great, but it’s Black and Mamoa that steals the show. They both seem to be having a blast in all its ridiculous chaos, and it shines through to some great fun.

For this world to work the CGI has to work and it is outstanding. They have crafted the perfect world of Minecraft (at least to this novice of the source material) that brings fun at every turn. They know it’s goofy fun and they all own it visually and in their performances. There is no reason this film should work, but it does in every way offering up visual fun, laughs, heart and plenty of action to entertain on every level.

Coming out of a film I had no interest in with the big smile I had was refreshing. I know the film won’t work for everyone but give it a shot whether you care or not. Hess brings a vibe that felt like Napolean Dynamite infused into the world of Minecraft to something only he could have pulled off.

In addition to the film, this release offers bonus content including numerous featurettes bringing the world of this game to life. Journey to the world of Minecraft is available now on digital and then on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on June 24th from Warner Bros Discovery Home Entertainment.
