Altered
review by Bobby Blakey

Director Tim Vuorensola burst on to the scene with his cheesy fun sci-fi action flick Iron Sky in 2012 that did well enough to spawn the 2019 Iron Sky: The Coming Race. Now he is teaming up with Harry Potter franchise star Tom Felton for the film Altered co-starring Aggy K. Adams, Liza Bugulova, Igor Jijikin, and Richard Brake. Could this be yet another fun foray into the sci-fi world or will it fail to grow on audiences?

Altered follows an alternate present where genetic enhancements have become the norm, those who cannot take advantage are pushed into the underground. It’s up to a few brave souls to level the playing field for everyone, but every revolution has its cost.

As a big fan of the Iron Sky films, I was interested to see what kind of insanity Vuorensola would be bringing to the table. There is a decent enough story here that could have been a great sci-fi superhero type flick, but instead it falls flat with so many issues that overshadows anything that might have worked here.

There are so many moments that attempt to build to something and then just shift gears into nothing. The burden of the characters and the societal split have zero impact due to it never letting anything flesh out. They even throw in a plot twist halfway through that was meant to be a big moment, but it falls flat in execution. From there they try to get some depth to the characters and story, but it doesn’t hit well enough for you to really care.

One of the biggest issues comes with the characters just weaving in and out of being on the same then turning on each other at the drop of a hat. Even going so far as throwing in some romance that makes zero sense or compatibility. The
moments just tend to get thrown in and out in attempt to push the story along but never finds its rhythm to make it worth caring about.

There are some ok action sequences and a fun idea, but little else. Decide for yourself and check out Altered available now on Blu-ray from Well Go USA.
