Romantic comedies are a genre that can take them as family friendly or as raunchy as they want while still maintaining the direction of what they are trying to pull off. The latest looking to walk that line is Anyone But You starring Sydney Sweeney, Glen Powell, Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Hadley Robinson, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Darren Barnet and Rachel Griffiths from Annie and Peter Rabbit director Will Gluck. Could this film bring love and laughs, or will you wish it was anything else?

Anyone But You follows Bea and Ben who look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold - until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia. So, they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple.

 

While I am a fan of both Sweeney and Powell, I didn’t have all that much interest in this film. The trailer offered up enough laughs to make it worth trying it out but was worried it was going to just fall in the normal predictable tropes of the genre. The blending of the fake relationship with the tone of romantic comedy helps to make it work a lot better than I expected it to.

 

The story is simple with a decent set up to get us where we need to be for it to move forward. It is one of those stories where if people just communicated then it would never have gotten there. These are the things that annoy me in this genre, but of course then we wouldn’t have a movie, I guess. The standout here is the chemistry between Sweeney and Powell both romantically and difunctionally. Both work to get you invested despite knowing exactly where this film is going on every level.
