Balls Up
review by Bobby Blakey

Peter Farrelly has delivered some of the best comedies of all time including Me, Myself and Irene, Kingpin and Something About Marry alongside his brother Bobby Farelly. Eventually they split up and started doing their own projects with Peter taking on a wide variety of films in comedy and drama. His latest film is taking him back once again to the world of comedy with Balls Up starring Mark Wahlberg, Paul Walter Hauser, Bejamin Bratt, Eva De Dominici, Daniela Melchior with Molly Shannon, Sacha Baron Cohen and Eric André. Could this film bring the laughs, or will it fail to cover the whole thing?
Balls Up follows marketing executives Brad and Elijah go “balls out” and pitch a bold full‑coverage condom sponsorship with the World Cup. After their drunken celebration in Brazil sparks a global scandal, they must outrun furious fans, criminals, and power-hungry officials to salvage their careers and make it home alive.
I am a massive fan of Paul Walter Hauser so anytime he is in the cast I am instantly there. He can do anything, but his comedy chops are always on point. Teaming him up with Wahlberg, who I think is great when going all in with comedy they had a recipe to make comedy magic and while funny it is hit and miss. The story is simple and silly reminding me of Tommy Boy but leaning heavy into the raunchier side of the spectrum.
The cast are all in with them all poking fun of themselves and diving into numerous over the top situations that brings the laughs. At the same time not everything lands and the film is so dumb at times that it won’t work for everyone. I love the old raunchy goofy comedies like this and had a great time with it. It limps along at time, and the running gag of the ball covering condom does get old, but it is also the entire focus of the film so expected.
The film isn’t breaking down the walls of comedy but will be one that is divided and likely one you either have a great time like I did or fall flat for you. While it’s far from the comedy classics of the old Farrelly films it does lean into those older tones and I am here for it.
