I love movies featuring a great cast full of interesting off the wall characters. The latest film, Breaking News In Yuba County features and excellent cast including Allison Janney, Mila Kunis, Awkwafina, and Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, Juliette Lewis, Samira Wiley, Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins Jr., Bridget Everett, Dominic Burgess, Keong Sim, Chris Lowell, Matthew Modine and Ellen Barkin. Could this film bring the laughs and drama or will it not be worthy of the news headline?

Breaking News In Yuba County follows Sue Buttons, an underappreciated suburban wife, who gets a taste of being a local celebrity as she embarks on a search to find him after her husband goes missing. She quickly finds herself in over her head, dodging cops, criminals and local reporters all aiming to uncover the truth. After being overlooked for so long, Sue goes to exaggerated lengths to prolong her “15 minutes of fame” and keep the truth from coming out.

 

I was hoping this would be one of those crazy dark comedy kind of movies and it delivered. This is such a great cast all pulled together by the always great Allison Janney. She brings so much frustration, pain and fun to this role as she just tries to find herself and be heard. Her yearning for acceptance and to be seen is heartbreaking and makes a lot of her decisions understandable while also frustrating. She makes so many decisions that just makes things worse, but that is kind of the point of it all and it leads down a path of laughs, violence and an all-around entertaining movie.

 

The rest of the cast are all great as well with them bringing some fun energy to each of the roles with Wanda Sykes a nd Regina Hall stealing the show. Their polar opposite approach to their characters offer some great laugh out loud moments and interesting direction for them both. As with films like this everything just goes from bad to worse as it plays out heading down a path that just works in all its chaotic glory. I really had a great time with this movie and hope it finds the audience it deserves.
