Brokeback Mountain 4K              review by Bobby Blakey

Director Ang Lee has such a wide range of films in his filmography including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hulk, Life of Pi and Gemini Man. In 2005 he took on the most unique of them all with Brokeback Mountain starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway and Randy Quaid. Now the award-winning film is getting the high-definition treatment for fans to enjoy.

Brokeback Mountain follows cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist who ended up on the sheep farm of Joe Aguirre in Brokeback Mountain, Wyoming in 1963. They were looking for work and under unexpected circumstances, the two men developed an intimate relationship that evolved into a profound but secret bond right under the nose of their families. After all, life is an exciting surprise. Who can stop love, life's ultimate truth?

When this movie was released, it was met with plenty of controversy due to the nature of the homosexual nature of the story. It’s such a ridiculous argument, especially in this world as we all know it is likely to happen more often than you might think. Telling a story like this that is a true forbidden love story in the world of something that is looked at as the most rugged

manly thing brings an uncomfortable, but beautiful story to the forefront.

Both Gyllenhaal and the late Ledger give outstanding performances here that fully embrace all sides of the narrative. They go all in in every aspect and you can tell that their friendship and dedication to the roles are true. The story weaves them in and out of different times and feelings in their lives and both rise to the occasion to deliver two of their best performances ever.

As powerful, loving and heartbreaking as their performances and story is the landscape makes its own impact on the viewer and film itself. It is a lush mountain filled with beauty and dangers that is fully utilized to not only the scope of the film, but the scope of the love and its importance of their relationship. I haven’t sat down and watched this film again since it came out and forgot how perfect it is as a film and in its execution.

The 4K transfer looks great and works to embellish the already beautiful visuals the film has to offer. This new release not only features the film but also bonus content including commentary, trailers, and numerous featurettes behind bringing this complicated love story to life.
