Claws:
The Complete First Season review by Bobby Blakey
“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”
These days TV has so many great options out there it is impossible to keep up with all of them. I saw the trailer for the TNT series Claws before it hit the small screen, but never got the chance to check it out. The series stars Niecy Nash, Carrie Preston, Judy Reyes, Karrueche Tran, Jean Lyon, Dean Norris, Harold Perrineau, Kevin Rankin, Jack Kesy, and Dale Dickey, but does it offer up anything that makes it stand out or will it be a set of nails not worth paying for?

Claws follows the rise of five diverse and treacherous manicurists working at the Nail Artisan of Manatee County salon, where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. Claws is about good women caught in bad places with worse men. It's the story of hardworking women trying to get by in this economy, set against the surreal, bright, gritty landscape of Florida and the luscious, absurd, extreme excesses of the crime world. I have been a fan of Nash since her hilarious stint on Reno 911. I was looking forward to seeing her in something with more meat to it and this show definitely delivered. I honestly didn’t know much about the plot of this series outside of the nail salon and I was glad because it was a ton of fun to see it unfold.

This series is littered with interesting and unique characters that you can’t help but enjoy watching. There are some that are just plain dumb and others that seem to have it a bit together, but what makes it so fun is that no one really has it fully together and in turn gets everyone in trouble at some point. I found myself invested pretty quick with this story and loved all the characters for their strange behavior and often over the top performances in the best way possible. I would have never thought that they could take a show about a nail salon and make it this great, but they have done just that.

Filled with drugs, violence, betrayal, loss, heart and a lot of fun this show brings everything to the table and goes all in for the first season leaving you wanting more. There are no extras on this release, but the show is entertaining enough that it doesn’t really matter and worth getting it for the show itself.
