Cowboys & Aliens 4K review by Bobby Blakey

Fresh off launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man 1 & 2 director Jon Favreau took on a different comic property with the 2011 film Cowboys & Aliens based on the graphic novel from Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley. The film features a great cast including Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Paul Dano, and Noah Ringer. Now the sci-fi western is heading to 4K for the first time ever.
Cowboys & Aliens follows a lone cowboy who an uprising against a terror from beyond our world. In 1873 in the New Mexico Territory, a stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on their streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde. The town of Absolution lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation.
I was so excited about this movie when it came out and bummed when I heard it was getting mixed reviews and ultimately didn’t do well at the box office. I am still baffled by this as I really liked this movie and upon revisiting it for the first time in years enjoyed it just as much as I did back then. The film blends two great genres to perfection and makes for a hell of a good time.
All the cast are great and go all in with Craig and Ford leading the charge. They both bring simple but layered characters to the screen and their dysfunctional relationship makes for all the tropes we love in the western classics. Blending in the sci-fi elements of flying ships and aliens smack you in the face with the best confusion of the audience senses as well as the characters in the film with simple nuances that add to the depth it needs to get its impact across.
The effects are well done, and the alien design and execution are awesome. I personally think this film got a bad rap and delivers everything I wanted. This new release looks great and lends itself to high-def treatment. This release offers bonus content including commentary, trailers, both the theatrical and extended cut and so much more.
