Eternity
review by Bobby Blakey

The theme of death weaves in and out of films all the time, but when it is the focus it offers so many avenues of creativity, depth and even fun. The latest Eternity takes the theme of death and blends it with the rom com with a great cast including Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, Callum Turner, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and John Early from Dating Amber director David Freyne at the helm. Could this film balance life, death and love or should it stay in the in-between forever?
Eternity follows an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity. Joan is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with and her first love, who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.

I knew of this film, but it wasn’t really on my radar, so I was pleasantly surprised to how hilarious and heartfelt this film was. It takes to rom com and flips it on its head in the afterlife to deliver something fresh with familiar tones. I assumed we would be weaving in and out of the afterlife so was happy to see it cemented itself in this fun creative place that offered up so many fun moments, clever gags and an original place for this love triangle to play out.

The entire cast are great with Olsen having great chemistry with both Teller and Turner in completely different ways. It spends most of the time with Teller to allow us to learn what this place is and how things work out before shifting the focus to this romantic situation. They are all great together and bring the ever-evolving emotions and chaos to the story, but the real scene stealers are John Early and the always great Da’Vine Joy Randolph. They add the guidance and levity to the story with Randolph’s comments and reactions to things having me laughing throughout.

The film touches on a lot of directions in relationships and loss in clever ways but never gets lost in the humor and loses the heart that it is bringing. I found it interesting in the varying ideals here of dealing with death and relationships that make you question where your heart might really lie. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this film and hope it finds the audience it deserves because it is really good.
