Richard Linklater’s 1993 classic Dazed and Confused not only kick started a lot of careers it has stood the test of time as a great comedy classic. There had been talk of him doing some sort of follow up for some time, but it looked as though it was never going to happen until now with his follow up Everybody Wants Some!!!, but does it offer up the same laughs as the first film or will it be a time in life that will strike out?

Everybody Wants Some follows a freshman pitcher Jake moves into an old college house with his new rowdy teammates. Together, they must navigate their way between girls, parties and baseball, all in the last weekend before school begins in the summer of 1980. To be clear this is really only a sequel in the sense that it follows more kids during a specific time. Where Dazed and Confused was the 70s, this film jumps into the 80s with an all new cast of characters. The story is simple enough and while it does entertain it is one of those films that really doesn’t have much of a point other than just following these people through this period of their lives. This doesn’t hurt the movie overall as it offers up some fun characters and situations that will no doubt connect with the children of the 80s, but when it is all said and done there just isn’t all that much that it accomplished. The issue really isn’t the film itself as it actually works pretty well, but it suffers from the fact that at this point it is something we have seen numerous times. While the film isn’t breaking down any walls in originality it does offer up an excellent soundtrack of the time that helps to take you back in time packing it full of nostalgia and fun.

For fans of Linklater’s work this film will not disappoint and it does offer up a good time at the movies, but just go into it understanding that it is just about the life, love, and fun of these college students and not some underlying message to be deciphered.
