   Goodrich
review by Bobby Blakey

Michael Keaton is one of those actors that can literally do it all. Throughout his career he has taken on every genre you can think of and had success in front and behind the camera. He continues to shine in everything and is now teaming up with Home Again director Hallie Meyers-Shyer for the film Goodrich co-starring Mila Kunis, Carmen Ejogo, Michael Urie, Kevin Pollak, Viven Lyra Blair, Nico Haraga, Danny Deferrari, Lauren Benanti and Andie MacDowell. Could this be another great film in his resume or will it fail to connect?

Goodrich follows Andy Goodrich whose life is upended when his wife and mother of their nine-year-old twins enters a 90-day rehab program, leaving him on his own with their young kids. Thrust into the world of modern parenthood, Goodrich leans on his daughter from his first marriage as he ultimately evolves into the father Grace never had.

I had heard of this film but never heard much about it. Apparently, it had a quiet release in 2024 which is a bummer as it is a pretty good flick. The film is a mixed bag of comedy and drama that deals with real life issues in relationships between spouses, parents and kids. Keaton is walking the line of it all perfectly weaving in and out of the emotional story with ease. He manages to take on a character that is extremely flawed and responsible for most of his own issues be one you can not only relate to, but also feel bad for.

He isn’t a horrible man, just one that got caught up in the wrong things in life and those around him suffered. With his sudden need to have to take care of his young kids takes him on a journey to reconnect with them as their father but also causes even more drama with his grown estranged daughter. Mila Kunis is great here as well with so much nuance to her performance seeing hope and disappointment as

it plays out. Early on you can see how pained she was seeing the new kids getting the love and affection missing from her own childhood.

This is further complicated with her feeling sadness and jealousy, but also seeing the glimmer of hope that he is changing, but has his own world is collapsing around him is a constant roller coaster of ups and downs. There aren’t any big twists here or anything and you can kind of see where it is all headed, but its about the journey of these characters that is really important to this story.

It’s a shame this film didn’t get a bigger push as it deserves it, but thankfully you can check it out streaming now on MAX.
