Happy Gilmore 2       review by Bobby Blakey

Throughout the 90s and early 2000s Adam Sandler was a box office powerhouse. In 1996 he brought us the hockey turned golf player Happy Gilmore that was yet another box office success. For years fans hoped for a sequel, but it seemed to never be happening. Now Sandler has reteamed with his Murder Mystery director Kyle Newacheck for Happy Gilmore 2, but does it bring the same silly fun and swings as the original or will it be a swing and a miss?

Happy Gilmore 2 follows Gilmore who returns to the sport of golf since his retirement after winning his first Tour Championship, to finance his daughter's ballet classes. The film features returning and new stars including Julie BowenChristopher McDonaldBenny SafdieBenito Antonio Martínez OcasioJohn DalyBen Stiller and an insane amount of cameos of actors, musicians and sports figures.

I love the original film like most and took the time to revisit it once again to make sure I was fresh and ready for the long-awaited follow-up. The film is still as funny as ever and set the bar high in my hopes for the new film. The new film is silly over-the-top, ridiculous at times and everything I expected it to be. Let’s be honest it’s a sequel that doesn’t need to exist and clearly for fan service, but I expected nothing less and it delivers.

One thing I always love about Sandler is that he keeps the same circle and once again not only brings back as many of the original cast, big and small as possible but pays homage to those that are no longer with us. The story is simple but works to push the history of Gilmore forward to almost back where he started but in a new way. Not all the jokes hit, but more often than not they do and brought the laughs that reminded me of the old Sandler films.

The tournament they are in this time is pretty dumb and takes you out of the normal world of golf but serves to bring more hijinks. Every cameo is well used and silly with some of them being surprising and hilarious. Sandler himself falls right back into the world and looks like he is having a blast. Depending on how you look at the film it delivers just as successfully as the original but in a different way. If you are looking for something new and fresh, this isn’t it and it’s not trying to be. It is just a silly fun nostalgic return that is worthy of the yellow jacket they all wanted.
