I love the horror genre. It offers up so many great directions and sub-genres and when they hit their mark are a bloody good time. Director Josh Ruben recently hit that fun mark with his fun flick Werewolves Within and now is looking to do it again with his slasher film Heart Eyes starring Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding, Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins with Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster. Could this film offer up some unique bloody fun or will it fail to find the passion for the genre?

Heart Eyes follows the “Heart Eyes Killer” has wreaked havoc on Valentine’s Day by stalking and murdering romantic couples for the past several years. This Valentine’s Day, no couple is safe.

When you are doing a slasher flick you obviously have to have a unique story that reels them in, but the most important parts are the kills and the killer itself. If they can find that special memorable look then you already have the makings for a great franchise. This one did just that with all the promotional work and the finished product looks great and menacing. The theme of Valentine’s Day has been done in the horror genre before so needed to have its unique voice and it does.

Sure, the film hits all the cliched tropes of the genre, but you expect that from these kinds of things. Right out the gate it wastes no time introducing two characters that you want to die, and they deliver. Much like the Scream series it kicks things off with some fun kills and lets us know the look and style of killer we are getting. As the film moves forward it does slow down a bit as we meet the

other characters before going back to the violent hijinks, but it’s worth the time.

The entire film felt brings a tone of films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer with as killer more aching to Micheal Myers on steroids. He moves quick, uses a variety of weapons and ready to kill anyone in their path to get their victim. Like any of these films there are plenty of twists and turns that takes you on a fun slasher ride. Its not breaking down any walls in the gerne, but with a great killer design and well executed kills and story the film is worth checking out.

In addition to the film this new release offers bonus content including commentary, gag reel, deleted & extended scenes, featurette and more. Beware the killer with Heart Eyes available now on digital, Blu-ray and DVD as well as streaming on Netflix from Sony Home Entertainment.
