Icefall
review by Bobby Blakey

Joel Kinnaman has taken on a variety of action roles throughout his career including Robocop, Suicide Squad and more recently John Woo directed Silent Night. Now he is stepping back into that world with his latest film Icefall co-starring Danny Huston, Bashar Rahal, Jaymes Butler and the late Graham Greene in his final role from Deadfall and Patient Zero director Stefan Ruzowitzky. Could this film be yet another great entry into the genre or will it get frozen in the wild?

Icefall follows young ranger Annie who arrests the mysterious poacher Harlan, who has been hiding from his past for years. It turns out that he knows about a plane with millions of dollars that crashed into a frozen lake. On their way to the station, they are attacked by a gang hunting for the money. Can she trust him now, when they need to team up to survive in the wilderness and escape from their pursuers?

This is one of those films that came out of nowhere and I knew nothing about it. I always dig Kinnaman so was looking forward to seeing what this had to offer. The vibe of the film reminded me of films like Cliffhanger but falls into that generic rut of these kinds of films that don’t bring anything all that new or standout.

We’ve seen these stories numerous times in the genre but will give it props for trying to do something different with it infusing some elements of Native American culture. Sadly, it’s not enough to pull this movie out of the run of the mill flick it is. There is plenty of action here that is good enough, but like the rest of the film that same old stuff.

The cast are fine, but they don’t do much to get you too invested in any of them
despite an attempt at one point. It gives context to the characters but doesn’t add anything that pushes the story forward other than showing why Harlan is out there in the first place. Kinnaman is good in the role, but it’s the kind that could have been anyone taking it on.

In the end the film is fine for what it is and action fans or Kinnaman films will probably enjoy it, but just keep expectations low when going in. Decide for yourself and check out Icefall available now on Blu-ray.
