Jack Reacher   4K Ultra HD

   review by Bobby Blakey

For the last few years Tom Cruise has been mostly dominating the box office with the latest entries in the Mission Impossible franchise, but prior to Ghost Protocol he had got things back on track with the 2012 action flick Jack Reacher. The film spawned one sequel so far and now it is getting the 4K Ultra HD treatment.

Jack Reacher follows the mysterious Jack Reacher who shows up to investigate a sniper who shot five innocent people. But what looks like an open and shut case turns more dangerous as the truth begins to unfold. Tom Cruise may not look like the character that is described in the book, but he sure delivered a badass here. This is just a great old school action film. There isn’t anything all that new here that hadn’t been done before, but it took things back to when action was great. The story delivers just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing without ever getting too deep. It’s not all that hard to figure out, but the trip they take you on makes it fun getting there. Cruise eats up the screening delivering his witty dialogue and executing all the action in top form.

Cruise continues to be kind of America’s version of Jackie Chan delivering his own stunts on his films now and continued that fun here with a great old school car chase. The rest of the cast did great jobs bringing their characters to life. Wernor Herzog was a great villain, even if he was a bit cartoony at times. He delivers some disturbing moments along with his made to be evil voice. Robert Duvall shows up just long enough to take this film to another level and deliver some great fun. Jai Courtney, who most knew from the series Spartacus and has gone onto A Good Day to Die Hard and Terminator Genisys, does a great job as one of the main baddies and offered up a great fight sequence going toe to toe with Cruise.

This was a great old school action film that delivers everything you would expect. I know some fans weren’t all that sold with Cruises look and size for the character from the books, but I loved it and hope we get more than just the one sequel because we need more of these old school action films. This new 4K release offers a great transfer letting the action burst off the screen and includes bonus content including commentary and featurettes that take you behind bringing this action series to life.
