Kindergarten Cop 4K review by Bobby Blakey
The Late great director Ivan Reitman delivered some of the greatest all-time comedies including Ghostbusters, Meatballs and Stripes to name very few. After his successful team-up with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins the two got the band back together for the 1990 action-comedy Kindergarten Cop. The film co-stars Pamela Reed, Penelope Ann Miller, Richad Tyson, Linda Hunt, Joseph Cousins, Christian Cousins and Caroll Baker. Now the film is getting the much-deserved 4K treatment for the first time ever.
Kindergarten Cop follows veteran LAPD Detective, John Kimble who has one last chance to put behind bars once and for all the elusive drug kingpin, Cullen Crisp, who is trying to find the whereabouts of his son and his ex-wife who run away with millions of dollars after numerous fruitless attempts. In high hopes of picking up clues, the massive officer finds himself at a bustling elementary school in Astoria, Oregon, posing as a substitute kindergarten teacher; however, to keep up the ruse without blowing his cover, John must keep under control a noisy classroom full of intimidating five-year-old adversaries.
This is one of those movies that no matter how many times I watch it, it always delivers the laughs. The whole film hinges on the chemistry and chaos between Schwarzenegger and the kids, and it is outstanding. Reitman found the perfect set of kids with each of them bringing their own innocent and fun personalities to the mix and keeping you eager to see more of them in every scene.
The other side of this that makes it work is the uncomfortable and out-of-place nature of Schwarzenegger in every aspect except for the action. Even in the romance side while you can buy into it, Kimble is clearly not in his comfort
zone, and it makes it work for the better in the overall arc. There is a perfect balance of action and comedy that makes it walk the line in both genres without disrespecting either. I loved this movie when it was released in 1990 and I still love it just as much today.
