Landman: Season One review by Bobby Blakey

Tyler Sheridan has had an insanely impressive career with writing films like Sicario and Hell or High Water along with creating the hit series Yellowstone and its spin-off 1883 and 1923 as well as co-creating Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness. His latest series Landman co-created by Christian Wallace, features another excellent cast including Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Jon Hamm, Demi Moore, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, and Kayla Wallace.
Landman follows a modern-day tale of fortune seeking in the world of oil rigs set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it's reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.
I loved everything Sheridan has been producing, but for some reason I wasn’t as eager to check out Landman. Not even sure why as it looked great but just kept putting it off until now. I am glad I finally dove in because the show is fantastic and might be one of my favorites of his outside of Mayors of Kingstown. The show is essentially the same tonal idea as Yellowstone but in the oil industry instead of cattle filled with plenty of violence and chaos to keep you engaged.
Billy Bob Thornton is outstanding in this role, bringing an essentially unlikable character to the forefront in a world full of unlikable characters and you root for him. He is grumpy, rude and just plain tired, but you can totally understand and see the love he has in whatever strange way for his family and guys that work with him. The rest of the cast are great as well, but was surprised how little Demi Moore got to do, but clearly will be more front and center in the second season.

The series brings all the twists and turns you expect from this kind of series with a great group of characters that all bring something unique to this world. The dialogue is some of my favorite of all of Sheridan’s series with most of them coming from Thornton, typically putting someone in their place. The final episode set up new characters and bigger and more dangerous things to come instantly making me eager for more.
Step onto the oil fields with some of the most dangerous jobs in the world when Landman: Season One available now on Blu-ray and DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment.
