Landman: Season Two review by Bobby Blakey
Tyler Sheridan has had an insanely impressive career with writing films like Sicario and Hell or High Water along with creating the hit series Yellowstone and its spin-off 1883 and 1923 as well as co-creating Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness. In 2024 Billy Bob Thorton stepped into Sheridan’s world with Landman co-created by Christian Wallace, taking on the world of oil rigs heading into its third season so what better time to revisit or dive into the second season co-starring Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Paulina Chavez, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland, Andy Garcia, and Sam Elliott.
Landman follows a modern-day tale of fortune seeking in the world of oil rigs set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it's reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics. In Season 2, as oil gushes forth, secrets emerge, and Tommy Norris' breaking point may be closer than he thinks.
I loved everything Sheridan has been producing, but for some reason I wasn’t as eager to check out Landman sow as late to the party. Not even sure why as it looked great but just kept putting it off but was so glad I finally dove in because the show is fantastic and might be one of my favorites of his outside of Mayors of Kingstown. The show is essentially the same tonal idea as Yellowstone but in the oil industry instead of cattle filled with plenty of violence and chaos to keep you engaged.
Billy Bob Thornton continues to be outstanding in this role, bringing an essentially unlikable character to the forefront in a world full of unlikable characters and you root for him. He is grumpy, rude and just plain tired, but you can totally understand and see the love he has in whatever strange way for his family and
guys that work with him. In this new season he is even more so but the new element of his dad living with him, played to perfection by Sam Elliott brings new dept to the role. The rest of the cast are great as well but was surprised at how little Demi Moore got to do the first time around but is front and center in this second season and does a great job.
The series brings all the twists and turns you expect from this kind of series with a great group of characters that all bring something unique to this world. The dialogue continues to be some of my favorite of all of Sheridan’s series with most of them coming from Thornton and Elliott, typically putting someone or each other in their place. The side story of Elliott and his new “physical therapist is fun, heart felt and brings even more moments to an otherwise heavy show.
This season continues the moment of this great show and just makes you eager to see what is going to happen next. I cannot wait for the next season and hope this series has a good long run. It’s filled with compelling stories, great performances and characters in a world that continues to suck you in and spit you out in the best way possible.
