Mick & Nick & Nick & Alice review by Bobby Blakey

Films dealing with time travel often get lost in itself and just become a mess. When handled right they can deliver some clever and entertaining stories that will work in any genre. The latest, Mick & Nick & Nick & Alice looks to bring the action comedy into the time travel genre with a great cast including Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Eiza González, Keith David, Jimmy Tatro, Stephen Root, Lewis Tan, Ben Schwartz, Emily Hampshire, and Arturo Castro from director BenDavid Grabinski. Could this crime love triangle deliver or will it get lost in time?

Mick & Nick & Nick & Alice follows two gangsters and the woman they love trying to survive the most dangerous night of their lives. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s one wild ingredient added to the mix: a time machine.

I love Vince Vaughn, but even more so when he takes on these roles that bring more than his usual everyman vibe. This time around we get double the Vaughn with him taking on dual roles of both present and future Nick. It’s an interesting idea that allows him to play the same guy with just a little difference due to the circumstances and lots of laughs. The supporting cast, most notably Marsden, is great as well with him doing a bang-up job hanging with the quick quips of Vaughn.

The rest of the cast are good as well with each of them bringing their own vibe and hitting the comedic marks perfectly. There is even a surprise appearance that while short is a great surprise. I do have to say I was excited to see the bad ass Lewis Tan here but alas didn’t get to see him bring the martial arts action. He was still great in his smaller role, and it was my own hopes that were let down nothing he did wrong. He and Castro have a great scene during the credits that had me cracking up.

The story keeps things simple despite the bigger idea of time travel. Even though it is the primary driving force to the story it is almost a after thought not trying to get deep into the lore of it which was a smart decision. It explains it quickly and then just lets things be and makes for some great moments throughout especially as all is revealed. The strength fo this film is in the dialogue exchanges with one notable, being a pointless but hilarious discussion of the Gilmore Girls that is brilliant.

My biggest surprise came in the action sequences here. There aren’t a ton until the final act, but it steps its game up to kick some major ass. Both Vaughn and Marsden bring it with the fights and the gun play that rivals any other action film. They didn’t bring the comedy to the action and in turn made for a great sequence that is not only awesome but showcases the two actors and their ability to carry it well. Seeing two Vaughns in action side by side is a feat and just elevated the film in the end.

This was a great flick that ends on a note that ends the story, but also an option to revisit this world should they decide to. If you like the cast, comedy, action or all the above then this is the film for you.
