Moneyball 4K   review by Bobby Blakey

Sports films run the gamut of all sorts of directions with more often than not leaning into the inspirational story. In 2011 Capote and Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller took on the story of Oakland A’s Billy Beane with Brad Pitt in the role. The film looks behind the scenes of the team as opposed to the sport itself with a great cast including Jonah Hill in one of his first dramatic roles, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Now the film is swinging its way onto 4K for the first time.

Moneyball follows Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane who challenges the system and defies conventional wisdom when he is forced to rebuild his small-market team on a limited budget. Despite opposition from the old guard, the media, fans and their own field manager, Beane - with the help of a young, number-crunching, Yale-educated economist develops a roster of misfits and along the way, forever changes the way the game is played.

What stood out in this film is the focal point of team building and the behind-the-scenes elements that build it out. Pitt is excellent here, bringing this subtle confidence to the role with passion to change things and the willingness to do whatever it takes no matter who dislikes it. The standout here though is Jonah Hill who really shines and deservedly got an Oscar nomination for his performances. The dynamic between Pitt and Hill is the backbone of the film and a delight to watch unfold on screen.

It’s a testament to the filmmaking when you can tell a story that isn’t offering anything overly exciting such as the baseball game itself and still makes it intense

at times. You find yourself rooting for the team and their new process that inevitably changed the game. It’s crafted in a fast-paced way giving the audience the feel of what they deal with and how fast the changes in players and direction happen which is insane in itself.

It is a fantastic movie that holds up to perfection in both storytelling and performances. This new 4K version looks excellent and is a great way to revisit this great film that is worthy of all its previous accolades and for a new audience to find it now.

In addition to the film in 4K this release offers bonus content including deleted scenes, a trailer, featurettes and more. Step behind the team and check out Moneyball when it hits 4K for the first time on April 28th from Sony.
