review by Bobby Blakey

Jack Quaid has been killing it on the series The Boys as well as voicing the lead character in Star Trek: Lower Decks. Most recently he appeared in the unique Companion and shows no signs of slowing down. His latest film Novocaine takes him into the action genre and co-stars Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh and Jacob Batalon. Could this film bring the promised action, or will it fail to make you feel anything?

Novocaine follows Nathan Caine who was born with a rare genetic disorder, where he can't feel any pain. When the girl of his dreams is taken hostage in a bank heist, he turns his inability to feel physical pain into an unexpected strength in the fight to get her back.

The trailers to this film showcased plenty of fun and action but I was concerned that it had shared all the fun already and nothing new to show in the film. While they did in fact show a lot there is still plenty more to enjoy, especially when you get more of the violence put together. The action is the focus of the film with good reason, but there is a lot more here than I expected.

One of the things I was happy with is the depth they go into with his actual health issue and how it affects his day-to-day life. Sure, they could have just focused on the pain and people would been likely fine with it, but the deeper aspects of it make you think more about it. Have no fear they don’t get too deep about it and still let them have plenty of creative fun with it during the action and fun of it all.

Under all this chaos is a love story with plenty of twists and turns, but love is the reason for it all. Quaid and Midthunder have great chemistry and make

you understand why he is willing to put himself through all this. I was happy that they didn’t suddenly make Quaid like a bad ass action guy and instead is taking a beating and only succeeds due to his condition and desperation. It ended up being the exact fun I was hoping for and I hope everyone gives it a shot.

In addition to the film this release offers bonus content including featurettes taking you behind bringing this action to life. Join Caine’s fight when Novocaine is available now on digital and streaming on Paramount+ and then on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on June 24th from Paramount Home Entertainment.
