One of Them Days
review by Bobby Blakey

Keke Palmer has already racked up an impressive filmography at a young age and shows no signs of slowing down. Her latest film, One of Them Days teams her up with singer Sza making her film debut along with Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Maude Apatow, Vanessa Bell Calloway and Katt Williams with director Lawrence Lamont at the helm. Could this comedy bring enough laughs to pay the rent, or will it get them evicted?

One of Them Days follows best friends and roommates Dreux and Alyssa who are about to have ONE OF THEM DAYS. When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown the rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.

I admit as much as I enjoyed the trailer, I was worried that this film just wouldn’t be able to bring anything to the mix. I am glad to say I was so wrong, and it captured the essence of films like Friday bringing a fun cast of characters, chaos and two friends that just keep making things worse and worse for themselves. The film is over the top at times and silly, but also grounded in some reality and heart in its overall direction.

The story is simple and could have easily fallen flat, but thanks to the chemistry and fun of watching Palmer and SZA together it works. They make great friends despite being opposites. As they navigate this chaos to try to get their rent and find their place in the world, they constantly find themselves in one crazy situation after another. Sure, we have seen these kinds of movies before, but it’s handled well and entertains, reminding us of why we love them.

While his role is smaller, Kat Williams is as hilarious as always and brings some wisdom to their lives trying to figure anything out at this point. The rest of the supporting cast are all good as well, adding to every moment that they must find a way out of. I had way more fun with this movie than expected and think it will find its way into some people’s comedy rotation.

In addition to the film, this release offers bonus content including featurettes taking you behind bringing the film to the big screen. Prepare to have One of Them Days available now on digital, Blu-ray and DVD from Sony Home Entertainment.
