Outatime: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine

                       review by Bobby Blakey

There are few cars as recognizable as that of the DeLorean from the Back to the Future series. Cars like the DeLorean are not only part of a film, but something that resonated with the imagination of all those that were captivated and entertained by it. While these vehicles forever live in our imagination the reality of their history is not always great. The latest documentary Outatime: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine looks to give the sad afterlife of the famed car a happy ending, but does it capture the magic the car deserves or should it have stayed back in time?

Outatime: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine Chronicles the efforts of Bob Gale, Universal Studios, and the film’s dedicated fan community as they work together to save this cinema icon. To do the restoration right, Bob Gale made a historic choice. Instead of hiring a car company or prop house to restore the car, Mr. Gale brought in a group of Back to the Future super fans to tackle the restoration. By doing so, the Time Machine became the biggest fan-led prop restoration in movie studio history.  Joe Walser (Head of the Restoration) and his team of Time Machine experts had one singular goal – restore the car with 100% accuracy. Every bolt. Every detail. Exactly like it was in the movie. That kicked off an intense, year-long restoration. Grueling work and long hours pushed team members to their breaking point. Even so, their dedication never faltered. While this film is only about an hour long it offers up so much material on this build it will no doubt appease any hardcore fans of the film series. This documentary plays like one of the popular car building shows which is perfect for what they are attempting to accomplish. It is so sad to hear the story of what happened to this car knowing how important it is to cinema history. As the film progresses it is purely amazing as to not only the work they did, but those that stepped up to help make this a reality.

They have structured the film perfectly to capture the struggle and passion of these guys as they attempted to do the impossible with something so important. There are some great moments both good and bad that captures everything they went through to bring this car to the future from the 80s to the 2000s. In addition to the film this release features numerous special features including commentary, trailers, photo gallery, deleted scenes and featurettes that are a must watch to continue the story of the famed DeLorean.
