Over the Garden Wall            review by Bobby Blakey

In 2014 creator Patrick McHale who had worked on Adventure Time and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack brought his own creation to Cartoon Network with Over the Garden Wall. The series features a great voice cast including Elijah Wood, Melanie Lynskey, Christopher Lloyd, Chris Isaak, John Cleese, and Tim Curry. Now the series is finally making its debut on Blu-ray.

Over the Garden Wall follows half-brothers Wirt and Greg as they become lost in a strange, magical forest known as the Unknown. With the help of a bluebird named Beatrice, the pair travel through the eerie yet whimsical land in search of a way home.

Animated series and features tend to flow in standard formats, but when you find one that takes chances or goes outside the norm you have the chance of something special. This is one of those types of shows. It takes something that seems simple, but there is something deeper here and it works on every level.

When this originally aired, I had no interest in it but was surprised to how good it was. Revisiting it for the first time since then and it is just as good if not better. The story is great and brings a great balance of laughs, heart and even some dark elements that keep you invested. Each episode plays like its own story while still feeding into the narrative of their journey.

The animation is excellent, bringing a simplistic style with just enough unique look and feel to make it more complex than you might think. The heart of this series is that of Wirt and Greg and their banter and dysfunction is enough to keep you invested even without the other great aspects. Greg steals the show with his quirky

comments and innocent mentality that brings the needed softness to this otherwise dark show.

From beginning to end the show pulls you in at every turn. It brings a great balance of supernatural and real-world struggles while never losing itself to either. The story embraces its strangeness and lets it be what it is without trying to spoon-feed explanations or make it for everyone. The beauty of it is that it is what it is with no apology and it is perfection.

This new Blu-ray release includes all 10 episodes as well as all the previous bonus content including commentaries, deleted animatics, original pilot and so much more. Grab your copy of Over the Garden Wall available now on Blu-ray for the first time from Warner Bros Home Entertainment.
