Penny Dreadful: The Final Season review by Bobby Blakey
Thanks to a wide variety of popular supernatural series they seemed to be churning out a wider variety of them as of late. Thankfully a lot of these shows are hitting cable channels that allow them to push the boundaries even more. Despite Penny Dreadful having a successful two seasons on Showtime they opted to wrap the show up with the third season. Now fans that may have missed this final season or just want to revisit can get the chance to step into this supernatural period piece one last time with Penny Dreadful: The Final Season on Blu-ray and DVD.

Penny Dreadful follows explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, and others who unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London facing off against icons of terror such as Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and Dracula in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul, even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations. The series engaging idea that takes stories that have been told countless times and breathe new life into them with a new vision continues to deliver. The series features a great cast including Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Billie Piper and Wes Studi that are all great in their roles and help to elevate the overall series to a higher level than it might have otherwise. The first season was a bit slow, but much like last season, this season jumped right in picking up from the events of season two while pushing forward with some new threats. As usual there are a couple of stories running simultaneously that can lose you at times, but if you just let it suck you in then it will all come together as it is meant to with pleasing results.

Much like the previous seasons, there are some really great monster moments and plenty of twists and turns to keep any fan of the genre entertained. The Victorian setting always seems to add more credibility to these supernatural shows as it all just seems to mesh perfectly into this time period and they have brilliantly recreated the look and feel of the time. While this series focuses more on the horror mystery of it all, there are some great bloody action moments that are a lot of fun to watch. They continued to do some great work with the monster effects and designs bringing a classic feel to them while still making them feel fresh and creepy. There are some really cool classic monster shots that help remind you what this show is really about. Much like the first two seasons they set up numerous moments to carry on into another season, but this time around it is much bigger and more satisfying with a wider array of creatures, blood and supernatural evil to take things to the next level and they managed to wrap it up well to end it all.

This is one of those shows that took a bit to find its flow at first but when it did it opened up some cool possibilities while bringing some cool moments to the small screen. There is a lot going on here despite its short season and manages to keep things moving and offer up some bloody good twists in the finale that changes what you may have thought about some of the characters through the entire season. In addition to all the episodes from the final season, this Blu-ray release includes numerous special features including character profiles and featurettes that take you deeper into the world of the series, so join the monsters and grab your copy of Penny Dreadful: The Final Season on Blu-ray and DVD available now as well as the complete first and second season if you need to get caught up.
