    Pig Hill
review by Bobby Blakey

Not sure why, but pig masks have become a thing for the horror genre. Whatever reason it started there is no denying that the right design can make for a pretty disturbing visual and just works. The latest Pig Hill is bringing a new killer to the slasher genre and stars Shane West, Rainey Qualley, Shiloh Fernandez and R.A. Mihailoff from director Willy’s Wonderland director Kevin Lewis.

Pig Hill follows a young author who investigates the disappearance of local women in the community of Meadville, Pennsylvania, quickly becoming entwined in a strange local legend about the creatures that live on Pig Hill.

I love a good slasher flick but am always cautious of them since sadly more often than not they miss the mark. This one brings a dirty gritty tone that manages to create that vibe fans want even with the lower budget it is working with. Thanks to some quick chaotic visuals and a really disgusting creepy look it works to give the fans what it wants in a slasher flick, but does still struggle with some of the narrative.

It is playing up the mystery and legend of the Pig here to try and keep us guessing who is behind the mask. While most of it is fine there are some characters and performances that are hit and miss. There are some of the characters that are downright unlikable which is usually fine, so you enjoy them being killed all the more, but here it has a different effect. I found myself just more annoyed and not caring about them with a lot of behavior not making any sense.

The plot twist to why it is all happening is unexpected and works great for the horrors of it all, but not all that surprising to the big reveal. I was hoping for a different direction but though it was pretty clear who it was going to be that

disturbing reveal works and makes for an uncomfortable nature to where it goes.

In the end I enjoyed this film for what it was and think the hardcore horror fans will have some bloody fun with it. It’s not bringing anything new to the genre, but still one that is worth checking out if you are into slasher flicks at all.
