Pizza Movie review by Bobby Blakey

Stoner comedies run the gamut of hilarious and just stupid. There are plenty that fail to deliver, but I love the possibility of what they could deliver so I am always willing to give them a shot. Add the unexpected mix of The Goldbergs star Sean Giambrone, Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo, and Becky badass Lulu Wilson and I am there. Their new film Pizza Movie co-stars Jack Martin, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Marcus Scribner, Caleb Hearon, Sarah Sherman, Justin Cooley, Kevin Matthew Reyes, Adam Herschman, and Lucas Zelnick from directors Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher. Could this bring the stoner fun, or will it be a high not worth tripping on?

Pizza Movie follows a shy college student and his reckless roommate who set out on a simple mission to grab pizza, but after a strange dose of a mind-bending experimental drug, they’re thrust into a chaotic night of absurd encounters, wild hallucinations, and unexpected revelations that could change their lives forever.

Look, you already know in this genre that there is a very high chance of it being ridiculous and this one is in every perfect way. The trick is to make it so over the top and then lean into it to own the absurdity which makes it work all the better. I had a blast here and it is mostly thanks to the chemistry between Matarazzo and Giambrone. As a fan of both shows and seeing them growing up on TV it is both awkward and fun to see them in this kind of film. They go all in on physically and in performance to make it a complete classic stoner blast.

Of course, the film brings all the cliches of the college bullies, goofy trips and moments that are just laughable and I was here for it. It’s not trying to change the genre or be anything other than exactly what it is and that is why it works. It’s not a film that works for everyone and not trying too. It is leaning into every
silly element and keeps things going at a fast chaotic goofy pace with the entire premise just two guys trying to get their pizza while high. It’s like the Raid with no action and drugs.

I hope this film finds the audience it deserves because it had me laughing and smiling from start to finish. Turn your brain off and dive into this film that is like something straight out of the 80s and have some silly fun like I did.
