Planes, Trains and Automobiles 4K
review by Bobby Blakey
Two of the most iconic comedic actors around are Steve Martin and the late great John Candy. 30 years ago they teamed up for the comedy Planes, Trains, and Automobiles directed by the late John Hughes. Now Paramount is bringing this classic comedy home 4K for the first time ever.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles follows a businessman who is struggling to get home for Thanksgiving, but burdened by one travel mishap after another, as well as the company of an annoying traveling salesman. I will admit as a kid in the 80s I loved pretty much all things John Hughes like everyone else, but this movie just never connected with me. I have no idea why either because after revisiting it sometime back I fell in love with it. This is yet another vintage outing for Hughes showcasing everything that made all of his films become such classics.
Martin and Candy are at their best here playing off of each other to perfection while still offering up everything you could want from each of them. It’s rare nowadays to get actors that always deliver no matter what they are in, but both of these guys always do just that. A bad movie with these guys is still great, but this one is one of the best that either of them ever did in my opinion.

Watching this I realized how much I missed both of them in theaters, but even more so Candy who always brought such a big presence to his over the top loveable characters and knowing there will never be anyone like him again. This classic not only offers up all the fun laughs and heart that fans expect of a Hughes film, but it also features early performances from Kevin Bacon, Ben Stein, Michael McKean, and Edie McClurg that makes it all the more fun to watch.

This is a must have for any fans of films or the cast and not only features the film, but bonus content including over an hour of legacy bonus content,
including an in-depth retrospective on John Hughes’ career that includes interviews with those who worked with him and explores his indelible impact as a writer and filmmaker. Additional previously released features include “Getting There is Half the Fun: The Story of Planes, Trains And Automobiles,” “John Hughes For Adults,” and a tribute to John Candy. In addition this release includes a bonus “LOST LUGGAGE” Blu-ray Disc™ containing over an hour of never-before-seen deleted and extended scenes that were recently discovered in the archives of writer, producer and director John Hughes. The newly uncovered footage offers a unique glimpse into the filmmaking and editing process and features even more hilarious moments between Steve Martin and John Candy.
