Resident Alien:
The Complete Series
review by Bobby Blakey

I love Alan Tudyk and think he is highly underrated. The man has had an impressive career and able to meld into any kind of character to perfection and often hilarious results. In 2021 he returned to the small screen with the series Resident Alien based on the Dark Horse Comic of the same name, from creators Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse. The series co-stars Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, Alice Wetterlund, and Levi Fiehler and now the series is coming home in one complete collection.

Resident Alien follows Harry, who crash lands on Earth and passes himself off as a small-town human doctor. Arriving with a secret mission to kill all humans, Harry starts off living a simple life, but things get a bit rocky when he's roped into solving a local murder and realizes he needs to assimilate into his new world. This complete series set includes all four seasons of the hit sci-fi dramedy, packed with mystery, heart, and extraterrestrial laughs.

I have no idea why I didn’t watch this show when it originally aired as I remember being excited for it after seeing the first trailer. I am so glad I finally did because the show is fantastic. It’s a mixed bag of drama, comedy
and sci-fi that is perfectly meshed together to create something familiar and original all at once. The ridiculous nature of the show works on every level with the most of that being thanks to the perfect performance from Tudyk.

They are able to get everything perfectly set-up in the first episode and then just feeds off it from then on out. Tudyk brings the perfect amount of awkwardness to the role that is made all the funnier by those around him just accepting his weird behavior. His voice choice and random outbursts make it a character to remember with every scene. He has an ongoing inner voice narration, that I normally hate, but works here and brings even more laughs. It serves a bigger point to move the story forward without having to always build to bigger and longer moments.

The supporting cast are all great and with every season each get more do to and evolve towards. The same can be said for the alien lore they create complete with new variations with each season. The looks of all the aliens and make-up is outstanding. Sure, there are some TV level effects here and there, but more often than not they hold up well with film quality. Knowing the importance of these looks and originality shines through in their work.

The series stays pretty simple and grounded in the first season as expected but heads off of Earth and into different alien factions as the show moves on. It is a fun aspect that allows them to bring in more great alien designs and fun in the story direction without it ever taking itself too seriously. Various mysteries unfold and characters change sides left and right as everything is revealed. It plays up kind of like a superhero show but with these aliens and is one to remember.

I am not surprised at home much I loved the series, but how much it just works period. It has everything you could want in a show and hope this new release gives it a chance to be seen by more people like it deserves.
In addition to all 44 episodes across all 4 seasons, it includes some deleted scenes from various seasons. Decide for yourself and witness the invasion with Resident Alien: The Complete Series available now on Blu-ray from Universal Home Entertainment.
