Revolver Lilly    review by Bobby Blakey

I love a good action flick especially ones with dangerous people who are pulled back into the world they left behind. More often than not it features some big action star so you are ready for them to do their thing, but when it’s a more unassuming character it is so much better. The latest from Well Go USA, Revolver Lily looks to bring that tone to the screen starring Hasegawa Hiroki, Hamura Jinsei, Shishido Kavaka, Furukawa Kotone, Shimizu Hiroya, Jesse Sato Jiro, Fukikoshi Mitsuru, Uchida Asahi, Itao Itsuji, Hashizume Isao, Ishibashi Renji, Abe Sadawo, Nomura Mansai, and Toyokawa Etsushi from director Isao Yukisada.

Revolver Lily follows Yuri who was one of Japan’s deadliest assassins, but she’s retired now and spends her days running an underground brothel. A news report about a former colleague who has died under mysterious circumstances doesn’t quite sit right. The dead man’s son is now the target of a military manhunt, and Yuri will do whatever it takes to keep him safe.

This is a by the numbers story that we have seen numerous times, but there is something about the period and the lead in Hasegawa Hiroki that makes it stand out. She brings a soft and stoic approach to the role that feels like the last person that would be someone to fear, but very easily transitions into a killer that you believe. She is the reason this film works at all as it is a slow pace with plenty of action but nothing we haven’t seen before.

There are plenty of twists and turns that lead to varying action moments that work fine. There are plenty of moments that you have to kind of let go of her taking on way more people than her six-shooter revolver would be able to take on. I give them props for shooting it in ways to make it work and even some side assistance and angles to help you believe more of what is happening even if it might not fully

be believable. The fact that she seems to be unstoppable and does not show any pain might give some pause, but I think it works to how you buy into her legend or not.

The rest of the cast is fine and the story delivers to make a film worth checking out even if it’s sometimes uneven and predictable. I wasn’t sure how I was going to like this in the context of the story itself, but the film ended up being a delight of an action film worth checking out.
