Rick and Morty: The Anime review by Bobby Blakey

There are so many great cartoons out there, but few have had the impact and secured the fanbase like Rick and Morty. After only three seasons the show has not only garnered tons of fans, but also comics, games, merchandise and more. The show has already received a long-term deal of up to ten seasons with season 8 due to hit on May 25th. After the widespread acclaim of the two Rick and Morty anime style shorts from director Takashi Sano they delivered a full season to fans aptly called Rick and Morty: The Anime.
Rick and Morty: The Anime follows the adventures of the Smith family, in particular mad scientist Rick Sanchez, and his grandchildren, the 14-year-old Morty Smith and the 17-year-old Summer Smith, whose parents, Jerry and Beth Smith (Rick's daughter), disapprove of their adventures. As Morty meets "time warrior" Elle, parallel storylines set sometime during the events of the sixth season of the main series explore the final months of the lives of the alternate reality spacefaring hero "Space Morty", and Morty's original father Jerry Prime.

I love the regular series so was eager to see what they did with this anime concept series. I have to admit that for the first few episodes I struggle to connect with it. With the different art style and even story structure it just didn’t feel like the Rick and Morty I loved. As the series progressed it started to grow on me, and I could appreciate what they were trying to do even if it didn’t always work.

The stories are decent enough and I enjoyed that they seemed to be one ongoing tale with some side nonsense infused as opposed to just the usual chaos. That stuff is here, but I almost feel like it was taking itself more seriously most of the time to create a different experience than what you might be expecting. That isn’t
to say that there isn’t plenty of laughs, violence and over the tope craziness just a different vibe that was kind of refreshing for this experience.

This show won’t connect with some people I am sure, including some hardcore fans of the regular show. I am not all that interested in another season and feel like it wrapped up the story it was trying to tell so think it’s a good one of journey to have some fun with.
