I love gangster films and like most love The Godfather trilogy and Goodfellas, but my all-time favorite is the 1983 Brian DePalma directed film Scarface starring Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Robert Loggia. Now Universal is celebrating the films 35th anniversary with an all-new 4K release.

Scarface follows spring of 1980 when the port at Mariel Harbor was opened, and thousands set sail for the United States. They came in search of the American Dream. One of them found it on the sun-washed avenues of Miami… wealth, power and passion beyond his wildest dreams. He was Tony Montana. The world will remember him by another name… Scarface. I have seen this film numerous times over the years, but more recently it had been awhile. I went in just to watch it with the excuse to see the 4K version of it and I was reminded of how much I really love this film. The transfer is beautiful and makes the film stand out even more so than it already does.

While the clothes and overall look screams the 80s, this film still holds up to perfection bringing all the intensity and violence that makes it so great. Both Pacino and Pfeiffer are outstanding here with Pacino chewing up every scene he is right up until the very end. There have always been two specific scenes that stood out for me with one being the argument between them near the end in the restaurant and the last moment of the film where he is screaming at the rival cartel during the shootout in his home. These are great moments but far from the only ones. I love every frame of this movie and once again reminded why it has stood the test of time.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is also releasing a Scarface “The World is Yours” Limited Edition gift set which includes the 1983 version of Scarface (excluding DVD), the 1932 version of Scarface on Blu-ray™ for the first time ever and a collectible “The World is Yours” statue replica making it a must-own addition to every film fan’s library.
