See: The Complete Series              review by Bobby Blakey

Throughout his career Jason Momoa has taken on a wide variety of rolls, but the ones where he is able to unless his inner warrior always seem to work best for him. In 2019 Momoa took on the role of Bab Voss for the Apple TV+ series SEE co-starring Alfre Woodard, Sylvia Hoeks, Hera Hilmar, Christian Camargo, Archie Madekwe, and Nesta Cooper from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

See follows the far future, where a virus has decimated humankind. Those who survived emerged blind. Now, Baba Voss, the father of twins born centuries later with the mythic ability to see must protect his tribe against a powerful yet desperate queen who believes it’s witchcraft and wants them destroyed.

The premise of this series is very interesting and forces some great performances by everyone involved since they are mostly all meant to be blind. This adds so many layers to this world in how they live, survive and fight. Right out the gate it sets up the tone of the show with some great action sequences that are violent and creative with how they do it without sight. This quality continues throughout the entire series although the pacing tends to fluctuate.

Filled with a wide variety of characters, you can get lost at times in the direction of the series, but thankfully it keeps it grounded and on point most of the time. I really enjoyed the first few episodes of the first season, but then it seemed to lose steam initially and changed focus. I wish the show had stuck longer to the way they lived and the changes in having these kids that can see in the tribe. Almost instantly it pits them on the run and in a fight for survival instead which still works but loses that impact of the people that I think should have been built up more.

By the end of the first season, it comes back together and opens the door for a new direction while still being familiar territory. The second season really finds its footing and steps it up in every way. The addition of Dave Bautista created a more threatening opposition and story that dives deeper into the lore of Baba Voss. Having Momoa and Bautista going head to head is perfection with both towering men bringing power and emotion to their feud.

There are still many of the same ideals and storylines carrying over, but I really liked this second season way more than the first. Even the action and gore seem more intense and effective. This carries things into the final season as well with it really keeping the momentum of the overall story and action intact. Outside of the pacing of the queen’s story arc throughout the show I really dug it. Every time it cut over to her and her story, I just lost interest and not sure why. It obviously is an important aspect of the show but just didn’t work for me.

In the end it did a good job bringing so many great things to the forefront and some great standout moments in action and performances. I hope we get to see Momoa and Bautista in something else together because they just work. The show wraps up well enough with some great powerful visuals and action to make it feel complete and a worthwhile journey.
