Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
review by Bobby Blakey
Lucasfilm has been bringing a variety of new programming to Disney+ since its launch in 2019. With shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor they have kept in line with the film galaxy of characters that we already know. With The Acolyte they took us into new corners and time of the Star Wars galaxy and look to continue that trend with the latest series Skeleton Crew.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew follows four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their home planet that leads them to get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. The series stars Jude Law, Kerry Condon, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Rober Timothy Smith, Kyriana Kratter, Ravi Cabot-Conyers and Tunde Adebimpe.
As a hardcore Star Wars fan, I am always eager to see what they bring next. I know a lot of people get angry or hate all the new content, but even when it doesn’t hit every mark, I am still excited and happy it exists. I have loved getting the chance to dive into new parts of this universe and Skeleton Crew takes in even more new directions that give a sense of fun, heart and day to day life before setting off on their big adventure.
Everything up until this point has been about the dark side vs light side, Rebellion vs Empire, government vs the people, Jedi vs Sith and everything in between. This series goes in a whole new direction letting these young kids lead the charge in a Goonies-like tale that not only feels fresh and new, but still very much Star Wars.
I love all these new characters with Neel played perfectly by Robert Timothy Smith who recently starred alongside Jack Black in Dear Santa. The character is just cute, funny and the perfect best friend for Wim. All the kids do a great
job bringing their personalities to the mix, creating a dysfunctional group that find common ground and no doubt friendship along the way.
I was lucky enough to get to see these first two episodes on the big screen and it felt just as epic as the feature films while being grounded in this new world before reminding us of the bigger galaxy out there. The second episode ends with more questions just like any great piece of TV and if these first two are any indication, then we are in for a fun ride.
I hope this is one that not only continues to deliver but manages to set the tone for more adventures with this young cast or others to follow. Take flight with the Skeleton Crew for the two-episode premiere available now on Disney+ and new episodes every Tuesday after.
