The Awesomes:
The Complete Series review by Bobby Blakey
Over the years there have been some really great adult animated series with some pushing the limits of an R rating and others just keeping the jokes flowing in a more mature fashion. In 2013 Seth Myers and Mike Shoemaker teamed up to create the animated series The Awesomes that ran for three seasons on Hulu. Now Mill Creek is bringing the entire series home for fans to enjoy all over again.
The Awesomes follows a group of not-so-super heroes who step in and replace the members of a legendary but disbanding superhero team. Under new leadership, The Awesomes attempt to put themselves back together in the face of intense media and government skepticism. The series features a great voice cast with many SNL alumni including Seth Meyers, Ike Barinholtz, Rachel Dratch, Bill Hader, Rashida Jones, Bobby Lee, Taran Killam, Paula Pell, Emily Spivey, Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Cecily Strong, Bobby Moynihan, Fred Armisen, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon and more! I knew nothing about this series going in other than it had this great cast and was quickly glad I had found it because it truly lives up to the name of being awesome.
I have always loved comics, but the more dysfunctional the characters the better and this series is nothing but dysfunctional characters. Every member of the team is fun to watch, but even more so all the different silly heroes here add to the genius of it all. Each episode offers up the stand alone stories while an ongoing story arc is still intact. It’s always fun seeing super heroes just doing real life stuff and here is no different. Sure they get the chance to take on super villains and monsters, but that is all secondary to their real life issues that seem to constantly beat them down.
If you never got the chance to check out this fun series then be sure to grab your copy of The Awesomes: The Complete Series available now on Blu-ray and DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment.
