   The Boss

review by Bobby Blakey

Melissa McCarthy has been on a role at the box office and shows no signs of slowing down. Her brand of humor is an acquired taste and not for everyone but that doesn’t change the fact that she hasn’t become a major star. Her latest, The Boss teams her up once again with her husband Ben Falcone in the director’s chair along with a great supporting cast including Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage, Tyler Labine, and Kathy Bates, but does it deliver the laughs or will it be a business venture not worth taking?

The Boss follows a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she's caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America's latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. Going into a film with McCarthy you already know kind of what to expect and this latest film isn’t much different. Once again she takes on a unique character that in appearance looks a bit different than her previous characters, but still sports the same foul mouth and quick quips. The story is pretty silly so you have to buy into the whole thing for the movie to work on any level. If you are willing to do that and are a fan of McCarthy then you are likely going to have a good time. It’s nowhere near as funny as her previous film Spy, but does offer up some of the usual laughs fans have come to expect from her. She has great chemistry with Kristen Bell who is the straight man for the story. Their interactions and difference in views of the world make for some funny moments, but the real treat is the always brilliant Peter Dinklage. He is a really bizarre character here that you will either love are be quickly annoyed by, but either way he clearly is having a blast playing the role.

The film didn’t offer up as many over the top laughs as some might hope for, but it does still showcase the comedic timing of McCarthy who is a real pro. Sure she is an acquired taste as her humor doesn’t work for everyone, but it is clear she knows what she is doing and is not afraid to give it her all. If you are a fan of McCarthy then you will likely have a great time with this movie, but those that are not and think teaming up with Dinklage or Bell will change your opinion then give it a try, but know she is still doing the same style she has perfected this time wrapped in a really high turtleneck.
