The ‘Burbs: Collector’s Edition review by Bobby Blakey
There is no denying that Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved actors around. From his early days on the TV series Bosom Buddies to his more recent film The Post he has been churning out a variety of great performances. Before one of his earliest big hits Big hit the big screen he starred in Gremlin’s director Joe Dante’s 1989 dark comedy The ‘Burb s alongside Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, and Corey Feldman. Now Shout Factory is bringing the film home with an all-new collector’s edition.

The ‘Burbs follows a typical American neighborhood, when some new neighbors come to live in the house next to Ray Peterson. These new people are really strange; nobody has ever seen them, their house is a real mess, and during the night you can hear weird noises from their basement. The only thing they know is their name: Klopeks. One day Walter (an old man of the neighborhood) suddenly disappears and everyone starts to suspect the Klopeks. This is one of those films that didn’t do all that great when it originally opened, but has found an audience to become a cult classic since. I remember seeing this film and loving it and after revisiting it once again loved it just as much.

The over the top silliness of it all coupled with the horror / thriller element makes for some great fun. Everyone in the cast is great, but Hanks is at his best here. One of the things I realized I missed about Hanks these days are his over the top physical fits he used to give on screen. They are always so funny and here we get a bunch of them. If there was any downside to the film it was just the reminder of the loss of Carrie Fisher, but getting to see her here in a more grounded role was a great joy.

In addition to this cult film this release bonus content including commentary, still galleries, theatrical trailer, making of featurette and an alternate ending. Team up with the rest of the neighbors to solve the mystery and grab your copy of The ‘Burbs Collector’s Edition available now from Shout Factory.
