Revenge flicks offer up some of the best action options and when you bring the fury of a woman to the mix it is often something all the better. The latest from Well Go USA, The Forbidden City looks to do just that starring Yaxi Liu who was a stunt double for Mulan in the live action feature as well as Enrico Borello, Sabrina Ferilli, Marco Giallini, Shanshan Chunyu, and Luca Zingaretti from director Gabriele Mainetti. Could this action flick bring the proper vengeance, or will it fail to find its redemption?

 

The Forbidden City follows two strangers seeking truth and vengeance. Mei arrives in Rome looking for her missing sister and, along the way, meets Marcello, who is desperate to find his father. Together, they will fight their way through the Roman underworld.

 

The story here is not anything we haven’t seen numerous times, is still effective. There are multiple layers to the story outside of just Mei’s journey of looking for her sister with Marcello that didn’t always work for me but also doesn’t jurt the overall film. I think there needs to be more time or evolution to get it to where it goes, but it does still make sense given the reveal of the story as it progresses.

 

They waste no time getting right to the meat of things with the opening fight sequence being fantastic and full of great moments. Yaxi Liu is great as Mei bringing both the emotional and physical elements to the role. Every fight scene she has is great with each getting better and better. They make sure to keep coming without making it just feel like each scene is set up for the fight, but you will no doubt be eager for each one to come.
